The Great Purge Of 2014-Our Daughter’s Closet

The Great Purge of 2014

Our 89 Piece Closet Purge FB

Day 1

My Daughter’s Clothes

To begin our journey into purging our home I chose to begin with my 14 year old daughter’s bedroom.

She may be sharing in the near future and we are working diligently to make that transition just a bit smoother.

Just the day before, we had been shopping together after an upsetting Dr.’s appointment.

She is currently all about dresses, layered shirts and new shorts which is great, BUT I was pretty sure she had some in her closet at home, hence fun teenage daughter clothing “discussions” ensued.

For anyone who doesn’t know, my daughters and I struggle with EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) Type III, especially the 14-yr old.

She suffers from daily sublaxations, dislocations and pain.

Currently, this syndrome is forcing her hip to protrude considerably on one side and causing severe discomfort when sitting on the other (equaling no school for the past month).

So her wardrobe offers a little more variety than the average teens- she has larger button-ups for when her elbow is casted or in a sling; larger pants and shirts to fit over her body brace; smaller sizes for the days she doesn’t wear the brace, a cast or a sling; pj’s and sweats for in public when she has to wear a cast and cannot get her jeans on; and skirts for when she is having difficulty with both legs.

Does this mean she needs 200 pieces of clothes?  No way!

But it does mean we keep a few on hand that we might not need every day.

(Thankfully she isn’t adverse to hand-me downs, rummage sales, resale and clearance and she actually purchases quite a few of her clothes with her own money.)

I wasn’t smart enough to take photos of before the purging of her room and closet, but here are the photos of after and as you can see…  She will not be naked.

Because of our physical challenges, (and I have OCD), we hang almost every piece of clothing in our house.

Items that go into drawers are separated by dividers and include: socks, intimate wear, swim suits, pajamas and grunge clothes.

I would love to be able to tell you that her closet is always so neat and organized but I’m sad to say this is not true; however, the goal is keep it this way because it makes finding something to wear SOOO much easier.

As you can see in the not so perfect photos, we have her clothing sorted by category, on the left of the center divider are (in order of length):

Shorts, capris, jeans, skirts, jackets, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, shawls and dresses

I believe items should be available with the most commonly worn having the easiest access, BUT I also have a need for things to be symmetrical so I like to have them sorted by length so that they will be pleasing to the eye.

On the right of the center rod we have:

Spaghetti strap tanks (2 or 3 to a hanger), wide strap “over” tanks, crop top over shirts, more layered shirts, t-shirts, belts, scarves and special baby items.

As you can see her closet is plenty full and will be for a long time.

In total we were able to purge 89 pieces of clothing from her closet and drawers.  Her room feels so much lighter now and things are so much easier to find.

Below is the pile we removed from her room waiting to be tagged for our up coming garage sale.
